Picture a Day: Jan 15
Most of the afternoon has been spent reading on my Surface Duo 2. It’s my most favorite thing to do on this device, as I get the benefit of an e-book with a bit of the feel of a paper book, thanks to the folding dual-screen form factor. I’m not sure what I would do if this device broke down, as Microsoft did not make enough of these to get replacements. And those of us who really like the Surface Duo 2 would not want to resell. So I’m hoping this thing lives for a long time, even if it seems that Microsoft has abandoned the Surface Duo line up.
Tech/foldable rant time:
The rumors about a Surface Duo 3 described a single-screen folding device which wouldn’t make sense for the model name, but would be an easier device to build and develop for, given the availability of other single-screen foldables. However, the Surface development team has gone through major org changes, so I have almost no hope that another Surface Duo will be released, much less a dual-screened version.
Semi-OT: I really, really, really want someone to make a dual-screened e-ink reader/tablet. I like reading on an e-ink screen, but for me, it’s hard to beat the experience of reading on the Surface Duo 2. I was waiting for the Surface Neo, so I could at least have 2 larger screens, but since it was going to be a Windows device, I’m not sure how the e-reading experience would have been, given Amazon’s lack of Windows app support (a web Kindle experience exists, I guess, but it’s inferior to the mobile app). I like the Onyx BOOX Color 3 that I have, which is essentially an Android tablet with an e-ink screen. I would like that with dual folding screens and a bit more of a stable app experience, please and thank you.
It really sucks that many companies like Microsoft and Google don’t stick with niche products that created a market. Some could reach a successful outcome if the company stuck with them long enough and actually worked to improve them, but many give up too soon, to the disappointment of those of us who early adopt and could see what the companies were trying to accomplish. It sucks to be a fan of these niche products, as fleeting as they are on the market. 😞
