Diamine Inkvent 2023, Day 15
The Ink
Day 15: Walnut - Standard
Walnut is a dark, cool brown with some dark greenish or black sheen around heavy applications. It really matches its name, as this is shade I think about when thinking of wooden furniture made of walnut.
Surprisingly, I don’t hate it. Brown inks are really not my thing. And of the few I have tried, they are warmer than this, which somehow makes them less appealing to me. The coolness and sort of gray undertone that I perceive weirdly leads me to consider using this ink some time in the future. It might be okay in a really fine nib to help it appear lighter and/or have shading. I’ll experiment.
I also realized that my beloved HP Spectre laptop is a cool, brown shade with copper accents, which may partially be why I don’t mind this brown ink. I think my second-hand Lamy Lx Marron has a cooler brown shade as well (it kind of matches my laptop, happily).
Argh, you can’t fully see the brown shade of my laptop in these pictures, but I think you can tell what I’m getting at.
Anyway, because I don’t have many dark brown inks, I don’t have that many comps this time. I have an old sample of Robert Oster Caffe Crema, but it’s too light and has a sickly green tone to it which was stronger when the swatch was wet. It looked pretty gross, actually. I don’t recall if it looked like this originally, or if it changed over time, but this is not a good match, nor would I really use this. 😝
I saw people mention similarities to last year’s Inkvent ink, Pick Me up. I didn’t think of this ink because my swatch of it has so much green sheen (it’s a scented ink which in my experience is very wet and viscous like sheening inks) that I forgot it was brown.
The Quote
Today’s quote is from The Office, Christmas Party:
Ryan: Angela drafted me into the party planning committee. Her memo said that we need to “prepare for every possible disaster.” Which, to me, seems…excessive.
I decided to draw a frame around the quote after the fact to sort of allude to walnut wood, but because I used my folded nib and was not particularly careful about drawing the initial corner diagonals, I have a super crappy upper right corner of the “frame”. 😝
