Diamine Inkvent 2023, Day 22
The Ink
Before we get started, a short story: I was browsing Inkvent videos yesterday evening on YT and pulled up someone’s channel to browse their older videos. But I immediately browsed away because they had a video up for today’s ink already (they must be in Europe or further east of the US, since it was already the 22nd for them during my 21st). Their thumbnail showed the name, Tinsel, and I got spoiled...again. 😒 Luckily, I didn’t see the actual color, but my imagination started thinking about what the ink might be. Tinsel typically is thin, silvery strands of shiny mylar or something that you drape on your Christmas tree, so I figured it would be a silver. My hope was for a translucent gray, possibly a dual-shader, with “star bright” silver or holographic shimmer. I was completely off! But also, does anyone make an ink that sounds like what I described? Because I would be super into it, as long as it’s somehow legible.
Day 22: Tinsel - Shimmer
Instead of what I described above, Tinsel is a medium, cool (?) red with champagne shimmer and brownish sheen in heavily saturated areas.
I’ve mentioned before that it was difficult for me to find red inks that I liked because the several that I tried earlier had a dark brownish component to them that made them look a bit too close to blood for my tastes (Writer’s Blood comes to mind, obv).
But before I started Inkvent, I went on a mission to find a nice “Christmas red” with gold shimmer. I wanted something like a deep, candy apple red with gold shimmer, like last year’s Inkvent’s Spiced Apple, but without the gross brown sheen that sullied the base color. I blogged about my mission and found a couple really nice inks that fit what I was looking for, and a few runners up. So you can keep those colors in mind as comparisons for today’s Inkvent ink, as well. They’re not exactly the same since the shades of red are different, but it’s the same idea of a red ink with shiny shimmer for the holidays.
Tinsel’s version of red doesn’t gross me out, but it also isn’t really my preference, as I prefer darker reds leaning towards burgundy or bordeaux.
Last year’s Inkvent had a couple comparable reds. Cardinal, a standard ink, is close, but is a tad warmer, and has a more orange component.
The aforementioned Spiced Apple has the deeper red I like (though not quite accurate in this scan) and bright gold shimmer, but you can’t see the yucky golden brown sheen that messes up the base color in this scanned swatch.
Finally, I have a swatch of Jacques Herbin 1670 Rouge Hematite, but the scan obliterated the golden brown sheen similar to the one that plagues Spiced Apple. Its red is also a bit on the warmer side compared to Tinsel.
The Quote
I think this is the last scene I noted from the Schitt’s Creek Christmas episode, “Merry Christmas, Johnny Rose”.
David: Don’t you guys put up decorations over the holidays?
Stevie: Umm, Nana Budd used to. There’s a box in the attic.
David: Okay, so you do have decorations, then.
Stevie: Yeah, but I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t be up to your standards.
David: Well, they’ll have to do, because at this point, the party’s at 7, and I don’t have any time to mood-board a color scheme, okay? Thank you.
Patrick: Do you have time to mood-board a color scheme?
Stevie: Does anyone?
Patrick: No.
It’s so tough being the only one who takes these things seriously, right David? 😆
